New York City Travel Guide

The Big Apple. New York City. With its bustling streets and iconic landmarks, there is so much to do in NYC that it’s virtually impossible to see everything in one visit. Basically plan on at least 4-5 days to get the main highlights of the city and make a targeted list of your absolute must-dos.

Getting Around New York City

If you want to be like the New Yorkers, you will be walking everywhere. I know that my feet were hurting every day I was there. The best alternative to avoid walking is to take the subway as it costs $2.75 per ride and the trains run 24 hours a day. By comparison, Ubers and Taxis are extremely expensive, especially from the airport.

Things To Do in New York City

I could probably spend the entire trip just walking through the city, taking in the sights, people-watching, and eating lots of food. Regardless, here is my list of things to do and eat in NYC.

Statue of Liberty

I truly believe you can’t miss the one thing New York is known for. Take a ferry ride out to the Statue of Liberty and a get tour of this famous monument. You can also get a tour of Ellis Island depending on the tour company you pick. If you’re on a budget, take the Staten Island Ferry as it’s completely free to board.

One World Trade Center

Visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost on this devastating day and the men and women who risked their lives to help. The museum creates an immersive experience that walks you through the events of that fateful day.

Wall Street

Considered a hub for international business, Wall Street is home to the famous Charging Bull, the New York Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, and the Federal Hall National Memorial. It’s also relatively close to the Brooklyn Bridge and One World Trade Center.

Broadway Show

Experience a live theatrical production as they take you on a whirlwind journey. Do you need to see a show in New York? No. But should you see a Broadway show on Broadway in New York? Yes, it’s worth splurging on a ticket. My friend and I were able to catch Wicked and it was spectacular.

High Line

The High Line is a local favorite. Once a train track, it has been converted into a walking park lined with gardens, public art, and greenery. It runs from 34th street to the Meatpacking district and back.

Summit One Vanderbilt

Summit One is an observatory unlike any other consisting of three stories of pure immersive, sensory overload with art installations and floor-to-ceiling windows with amazing views. For all my ladies, there is a spectacular view in the women’s bathroom. I love sunset because you still get a little daytime, and see the transition from the red-orange skies, to evening. It’s the perfect combination. Order your tickets well in advance online.

Chelsea Market

If you’re taking a stroll on the High Line, then hop on over to Chelsea Market which is housed in an old industrial building. It’s considered one of the best food halls in New York and home to many retail shops.

Central Park

This park offers 150 square blocks filled with lakes, walking trails, horse-drawn carriages, outdoor concerts and movies, playgrounds, sculptures, and guided tours. It provides a different view of the city and offers something different for everyone from rowing a boat to quiet picnics.

Visit the museums

I love to get lost in museums and the ones in New York City are world-renowned. Some of the ones to visit include the Guggenheim Museum with its collection of impressionist and contemporary art to the Met, one of the biggest museums in the world.

Times Square

Have you ever been to New York if you didn’t visit? I know Times Square is the most touristy destination in all of New York and is constantly packed full of people. Be that as it may, there is just something about the bustle of the crowd, the honking of the yellow cabs and the shining lights all around that make you feel like you’re finally in NYC. Take all the photos and TikToks you want just don’t eat the food around there. You can find better eateries if you walk a little.

Free Walking Tour – Brooklyn Bridge

I’m all for free walking tours and this one was well worth it. Over the course of the tour we saw New York City Hall, learned the history of the Brooklyn Bridge, and strolled through some neighborhoods. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos. You will need good walking shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. There are not a lot of rest stops on this 3 hours tour. Remember to tip at the end!

Grand Central Station

Grand Central Station is a historic landmark filled with history, architecture, shopping and dining, and transportation. I recommend checking out The Campbell, a New York institution, for some drinks, and be sure to make your reservations ahead of time.
